The Stallion

Chances are You've been Looking for that Perfect Stallion. If you are like most people you've been looking through stallion magazines, surfing the web, talking to friends, and generally looking for all the information you can get your hands on. Here are some things to ask yourself when picking out a stallion.

1. What Breed or Breeds do You Want to Consider?

2. This can sometimes be the simplest choice, unless of course you're not quite sure yet. If you have a Quarter Horse mare and you want to foal a baby that will run the circuit, your breed choice is simple, but if you want something a little different or a Sport Horse your choices are limitless. If this is the case, find out what kind of horses you ARE interested in and look at their strengths and their weaknesses. What Aspects of Your Mare Could be Improved Upon?

3. If you have a mare that's a little narrow in the butt you should be looking for a horse that has an impressive rear end. On the other hand if you have an old style quarter horse and would like something with a little more refinement, you may want to look for an extremely refined horse. This in no way means that you should pick a scrawny so-so stallion in hopes their traits will even out, because chances are they won't. Rule out any Stallions You Absolutely Cannot Afford.

4. Do realize though that you shouldn't settle for a much lesser horse. Do your research and you'll probably be able to find (at worst) a few stallions that meet your criteria. (You may even consider attempting to negotiate the fees. Some owners might be offended, but you'll never know until you ask.) Gather all the Information You can About Your Prospective Stallions and Weigh the Good and Bad of each Stallion.

It's always important that you choose the best stallion for your mare that will produce the offspring you desire.
